WHAT IS A WET ROOM?
A wet room (or walk in shower as they are sometimes called) is a fully waterproofed (tanked) shower room. Popular in mainland Europe, the wet room was once associated with care homes and hospitals, however it has now evolved into a chic showering environment often found in luxury hotels. Now with the modern advancements in waterproofing materials and pre-formed showers trays a stylish wetroom can be created in the home.
A wetroom can be installed in both lower and upper floors and is ideal for a small bathroom, making maximum use of the available space.
Unlike a traditional shower enclosure, with a step-in tray, a wet room has the showering area built into the floor, creating a no step walk in showering area. This level walk in approach makes a wet room the ideal choice for all family members but especially young children and elderly relatives, or those with reduced mobility.
The easiest way to build a wet room is with a wet room shower tray with an inbuilt fall to the drain. This will ensure that the water drains away and does not pool or flood the rest of the room. Typically, a wet room shower panel is added to help keep the water in the shower area – who wants damp towels or soggy toilet tissue!
