What Is BBA Certification?

An independent explanation of what a BBA Agrément Certificate actually confirms, how the assessment works, and the certified wedi systems we supply and our own WetBase ONE range of wetroom shower trays.

Who is the British Board of Agrément?

The BBA was set up in 1966, originally under government backing, and has operated ever since as an independent, non-profit certification body for the UK construction industry.² It now covers roughly 200 different product sectors, from insulation and roofing through to tanking and wet room systems, and its assessors work with manufacturers directly to test products against current British and European standards before any certificate is issued.^{1 2}

A BBA Agrément Certificate is not a logo a manufacturer can simply apply for and expect to receive. It follows a structured process: submission of technical data, independent laboratory testing, on-site or in-service assessment where relevant, and ongoing surveillance to confirm the certified product continues to be manufactured to the same standard after the certificate is issued.¹

What does a BBA certificate actually confirm?

A BBA Agrément Certificate for a construction product typically confirms three things:¹

• Performance verification — that the product performs as the manufacturer claims, based on independent testing rather than the manufacturer’s own assertion
• Compliance with Building Regulations — that, when installed, used and maintained correctly, the product satisfies the relevant requirements across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
• Defined scope and limitations — exactly what the product has been tested for (and what it hasn’t), so specifiers know precisely what they can rely on the certificate for

This last point matters. A BBA certificate is specific to the tested product and its assessed use — it isn’t a general “seal of quality” that can be stretched to cover every application a product might be put to.

Why this matters for wet rooms specifically

It’s worth being specific about what’s actually certified here: this isn’t certification for a separate tanking membrane wrapped around an otherwise ordinary tray or board — the wedi building boards and wedi Fundo shower elements are themselves the certified, independently-tested products. wedi Building Boards (Certificate 00/3675) are tested and certified for moisture resistance and watertightness as a substrate, and wedi Fundo Shower Elements (Certificate 14/5126) are tested and certified to provide a genuinely waterproof shower base.^{4 6} The full technical scope of each certificate is set out in the linked certificates further down this page.

Waterproofing is the single area of a wet room installation where cutting corners causes the most expensive, disruptive failures — leaks, damp, and de-bonded tiling that can mean stripping a room back to the studs to fix. Since a 2018 update to BS 5385-1, the British Standard covering wall and floor tiling, a suitable tanking membrane or system is required in any domestic “wet area.”³

The practical problem for anyone specifying a wet room is that waterproofing performance isn’t something you can see or check once tiles are down — by the time a failure shows up, the fix is expensive. This is exactly the gap independent certification is designed to close: a BBA certificate means the watertightness, bond strength and durability of the system have already been tested by a third party, rather than being taken on trust after the room is finished.

Our WetBase ONE range is manufactured exclusively for Wetrooms Online by wedi in Germany, using wedi’s own building board and Fundo shower element technology. Because WetBase ONE is manufactured under wedi’s own production and quality processes, it’s covered by the same BBA certification held by wedi — certificates 00/3675 and 14/5126 below. WetBase Standard and WetBase Linear are separate ranges and are not wedi-manufactured, so this certification doesn’t extend to them.
