Specifying Wet Rooms: Support for Architects, Designers & Specifiers
Specifying a wet room means getting the floor construction, drain, waterproofing, finish and user needs right before a single tile goes down. We help you choose the right system for each project, drawing on our own WetBase® range and the specialist manufacturers we work with every day.
Wetrooms Online helps architects, interior designers, planners and specifiers select the right wet room products for each install. We give product selection advice based on many years of specialist experience, provide project and volume quotes, supply the manufacturers’ technical documentation, and liaise directly with manufacturers’ technical teams on your behalf — across WetBase®, wedi, Impey, AKW, Contour, Warmup and Merlyn.
Why wet room specification needs specialist input
A wet room is a system rather than a single product. The former, drain, waterproofing, floor finish and any underfloor heating all have to work together, and most of the decisions are hidden once the room is tiled. Since a 2018 update to BS 5385-1, the British Standard for wall and floor tiling, a suitable waterproofing membrane or system is required in domestic wet areas.1 Where a project falls under Approved Document M, access requirements will also shape the showering area.2
These are the points we work through with specifiers on almost every project:
Timber joists or concrete, joist direction and centres, and the depth available below finished floor level. This decides which formers and drains are feasible.
Point drain or linear channel, where it sits, and how the waste reaches the stack without clashing with joists or services.
Tile, large-format porcelain, natural stone or safety vinyl. Not every former accepts every finish — vinyl and Altro need a dedicated system.
Wheelchairs, shower chairs and commodes concentrate load on small areas. Only formers rated for point loading should be specified where this applies.
Which tanking system suits the substrate and former, and how far it extends beyond the showering area onto floors and walls.
How underfloor heating sits within the floor build-up, and the screen or enclosure needed to keep water within the showering zone.
How we help specifiers
Product selection advice
Tell us about the project and we’ll recommend the system that fits — and explain why. Our advice comes from supplying and supporting wet room installations across the UK since 2008, for trade and private clients alike.
Project & volume quotes
For multi-unit developments, care and later-living schemes or larger refurbishments, we’ll prepare a project quote and plan supply around your programme so the right quantities arrive together.
Technical documentation
We supply the manufacturers’ published datasheets, fitting instructions and certification for the products you specify — including the BBA certificates for wedi building boards and Fundo shower elements — ready for your project file.
Manufacturer liaison
Where a project needs more depth, we connect you with the right technical team at wedi, Impey, AKW, Contour, Warmup or Merlyn, and stay involved so the recommendation and the supply stay joined up.
What we don’t do: we’re a specialist supplier, not a design consultancy. We don’t produce bespoke CAD drawings, BIM models or written specification clauses. Where a manufacturer publishes its own drawings, design support or CPD — for example Warmup’s Projects team, which offers system layouts and NBS-listed products,3 or the RIBA-accredited CPD published by AKW and Impey4 5 — we’ll point you to it or introduce you directly.
The brands we specify — and where each fits
We work closely with a small group of specialist manufacturers rather than stocking everything. That means we know each system’s strengths and limits in detail, and can recommend honestly between them.
Our own WetBase® range covers the most common tiled wet room specifications, with three systems for different drain and tiling requirements. All WetBase® trays carry a 20-year guarantee and are designed for a tiled finish.
Point drain former in 15 sizes with six drain positions set at manufacture. A versatile choice for most tiled projects.
View WetBase Standard →Linear channel drain with an outlet positioned by the installer during fitting, useful where joists restrict the waste route.
View WetBase Linear →Single-fall former manufactured by wedi in Germany and covered by wedi’s BBA certification. Suited to large-format tiles.
View WetBase ONE →German manufacturer of waterproof building boards, Fundo shower elements, Sanoasa benches and design surfaces. wedi building boards (certificate 00/3675) and wedi Fundo shower elements (certificate 14/5126) both hold BBA certification.
Specialist in accessible and level-access showering. Impey AquaDec EasyFit is a tiled-finish former suitable for wheelchair use; Impey Level Dec is designed for vinyl and Altro finishes and is also wheelchair-suitable.
Long-standing specialist in accessible bathrooms. AKW Tuff Form is rated for wheelchair and point-loading use, alongside the TriForm Linear and DuraForm formers.
Accessible showering products including the Contour ShowerDec wet room former, rated to 100 stone, plus level-access shower trays and carer screens.
Electric underfloor heating, thermostats and insulation boards for wet rooms and bathrooms. With WetBase® Standard, electric underfloor heating is laid on top of the tray, between the tray surface and the tiles.
Wet room shower screens, walk-in panels, enclosures and low-level shower trays, including the Merlyn Series, Ionic and 8 Series ranges.

What to send us for a recommendation
The more we know at the outset, the more precise our recommendation. A short email with the following is usually enough to get started:
- Floor construction — timber or concrete, joist size, centres and direction
- Depth available below finished floor level
- Showering area size and preferred drain type and position
- Intended floor finish and tile format
- Who will use the room — including wheelchair or shower-chair use
- Underfloor heating, screen and enclosure requirements
- Number of units and project programme
- Any plans or sketches you’re able to share
How a specification enquiry works
- Send us the brief. Call 0800 280 8008 or email the project details listed above.
- We recommend a system. You’ll get a clear recommendation with the reasoning behind it, and alternatives where more than one route works.
- Documentation and quote. We send the relevant manufacturer datasheets, fitting instructions and certification, with a project quote where required.
- Manufacturer support where needed. For complex details we bring in the manufacturer’s technical team.
- Supply to programme. We plan delivery around your build so the right products arrive when they’re needed.
